Boundary Fencing New Zealand
Boundary fencing defines where your property ends, adds security, manages noise and sightlines, and it's one of the first things people see. Mako's aluminium range covers every boundary situation, from a single residential section to a multi-unit development.
Mako products that work for boundary fencing
Mako Picket
A classic boundary profile that creates a softer appearance. Being made from durable aluminium, it retains its smart appearance without the maintenance of a timber picket.
Mako Blade
The flat blade profile suits architectural homes and apartment developments. Often used for front and side boundaries where design consistency with the building is important. It works well at street level and on elevated boundaries alike.
Mako Swim
Where you want a boundary that's open and visible, Swim works well. Often used on front boundaries of contemporary homes where the fence is part of the kerb appeal rather than a privacy barrier.
Mako Horizontal Slat
Popular on modern builds where the horizontal line is part of the architecture. Works well alongside board-and-batten cladding and other linear design elements. Available in solid and louvred configurations, so you can dial in the level of privacy to suit the situation.
Mako Vertical Slat
A solid, private boundary fence. The vertical slat profile connects naturally with other Mako designs and is available in 1800mm height, which also makes it suitable where a boundary fence forms part of a pool barrier.
What to know before you buy
Boundary fencing in New Zealand is covered by the Fencing Act 1978, which sets out how costs are shared with neighbours when a fence is on or near a shared boundary. Standard residential fence height is generally up to 2 metres without requiring consent, but this varies by council zone.
If you're fencing a shared boundary, it's worth having a chat with your neighbour before you start. The Fencing Act provides a process if you can't agree, but most people find it easier to sort things out over the back fence. We’ve written a bit more about how those conversations tend to go, including how costs are typically split and what happens if you want something nicer than the basics.
And if you’d like help thinking it through, Luke has worked with plenty of shared-boundary projects and is happy to walk you through the spec and the cost split, so you know exactly where you stand before raising it with the neighbours.
Frequently asked questions
How high can a boundary fence be in New Zealand without consent?
In most residential zones, fences up to 2 metres high don't require a building consent. Height limits can vary by council and zone, so it's worth checking with your local authority for your specific address before you build.
Who pays for a boundary fence between neighbours?
Under the Fencing Act 1978, costs for a boundary fence on a shared boundary are generally split equally between neighbours, unless one party wants something beyond a 'standard fence', in which case they cover the difference. The Act also sets out a formal notice process if you can't reach an agreement.
Can I fence right on the boundary line?
This is something to confirm with your council and, practically, with your neighbour. Technically the fence can sit on the boundary. But encroachment onto a neighbour's land, even by the width of a post, can cause problems later. Most installers position the fence so the post sits on your side.
Is aluminium fencing strong enough for a boundary fence?
Yes. Mako aluminium fencing uses 6063-T5 grade aluminium, which is structurally robust and won't rust, rot or require repainting. It carries a five-year warranty and is built to handle New Zealand's toughest coastal weather conditions.
How long does aluminium fencing last?
Mako products are powder-coated for UV and weather resistance. In normal residential conditions, a properly installed aluminium fence should last well beyond ten years with minimal maintenance. Our five-year warranty covers the product against manufacturing defects.
