Pool Fencing New Zealand
Pool fencing isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes, though that part’s unavoidable. In New Zealand, it needs to be at least 1200mm high, with no gaps wider than 100mm, no easy footholds, and a gate that swings shut and latches itself like clockwork. Mako supplies premium aluminium pool fencing that meets requirements and looks good doing it.
Mako products that work for pool fencing
Mako Picket
Mako Picket leans into that traditional picket fence vibe with a modern edge architects love and durability the old picket fences can only dream of. Pool compliant and available in 1200mm and 1500mm heights.
Mako Blade
A flat-blade profile that suits modern builds and minimalist landscaping. Pool compliant up to 1500mm. The close blade spacing gives you privacy from certain angles while keeping sightlines to the water from the house. Useful if you have young children.
Mako Swim
The most popular choice for pool enclosures. Vertical tube construction with no horizontal rails below the top rail, which keeps it compliant and clean. Available in 1200mm and 1500mm heights for pool fencing applications. Works as standalone pool fencing or connects into a boundary fence.
Mako Vertical Slat
Where pool fencing needs to connect into a boundary fence, the 1800mm Vertical Slat works particularly well. New Zealand regulations require that any boundary fence forming part of a pool barrier must be at least 1800mm high. The Vertical Slat meets that requirement while keeping your fencing consistent across the property.
What to know before you buy
New Zealand pool fencing is governed by NZS 8500:2006 and the Building Act 2004. All new pool fences require a building consent. Key requirements include: a minimum height of 1.2m for the pool barrier itself; no climbable footholds within 900mm of the top of the fence; a self-latching gate that opens away from the pool; and any boundary fence forming part of the barrier must be 1.8m or higher.
Mako's pool-compliant products come with full structural drawings for consent purposes. These are available on each individual product page. If you’re not sure where your property sits, get in touch. Luke has worked through these requirements across most New Zealand councils and will make sense of it for you, so you know exactly where you stand.
Frequently asked questions
Does my pool fence need a building consent in New Zealand?
Yes. Under the Building Act 2004, all new pool barriers require a building consent from your local council. Mako can provide structural drawings to support your application.
What height does a pool fence need to be in New Zealand?
The pool barrier itself must be at least 1200mm high. If your boundary fence forms part of the pool barrier, it must be at least 1800mm high. All Mako pool-compliant products are available in the correct heights for each application.
Which Mako products are pool fence compliant?
Mako Swim, Mako Blade, Mako Picket and Mako Vertical Slat are all available in pool-compliant configurations. Each product page includes downloadable structural drawings for consent purposes.
Can my boundary fence be part of my pool barrier?
Yes, in many cases. When it is, the boundary fence section must meet the 1800mm minimum height requirement. The Mako Vertical Slat at 1800mm is designed specifically to handle this transition well.
Does aluminium pool fencing need maintenance?
Mako aluminium fencing is powder-coated and doesn't rust, rot or need repainting. An occasional wash down is all that's needed. It carries a five-year warranty.
