Aluminium Balustrades New Zealand
A balustrade is a building requirement wherever there's a fall risk one metre or above. But that doesn't mean it has to look like one. Our aluminium balustrade range holds its place without forcing itself into the conversation. They are designed to work with the materials around them, reinforce the intent of the design, and stand up to the elements.
Aluminium delivers on all of it. No upkeep. No compromise. And a clean, architectural finish that lasts for projects built to stand the test of time. All grounds covered without the hefty price tag.
Mako products that work for balustrades
Mako Blade
Mako Blade is our top seller for balustrades. The flat horizontal blade profile sits cleanly against decks, stairs and elevated walkways. Structurally certified for balustrade applications, with F4 structural drawings available for consent. Works at 1200mm height for standard balustrade requirements.
Mako Swim
Where the design calls for a lighter, more open look, Swim balustrades work well on decks with views you don't want to interrupt. The vertical tube profile is certified for fall-from-height prevention and is available in 1200mm height for balustrade use. F4 structural drawings are available on the product page.
What to know before you buy
New Zealand Building Code Clause F4 requires a barrier wherever a fall of more than 1 metre is possible. For most residential deck and stair applications, the required barrier height is 1 metre. For commercial applications and some stair configurations, the requirements differ. All Mako balustrade products are structurally certified and come with F4 structural drawings to support your building consent application.
If you’re not sure where your property sits, get in touch. Luke has worked through these requirements across most New Zealand councils and will make sense of it for you, so you know exactly where you stand.
Frequently asked questions
When is a balustrade required in New Zealand?
Under New Zealand Building Code Clause F4, a balustrade or barrier is required wherever there's a fall risk of more than 1 metre. This applies to decks, stairs, mezzanines, elevated walkways and similar areas.
What height does a balustrade need to be?
For most residential applications, 1 metre is the minimum required height. Some applications, including commercial buildings and certain stair configurations, have different requirements. Your council or a licensed building practitioner can confirm the specific requirement for your project.
Do Mako balustrades come with structural certification?
Yes. Mako Blade and Mako Swim are both structurally certified for balustrade applications. F4 structural drawings are available to download from each product page, ready to include in your consent documentation.
Can I use the same product for my balustrade and pool fence?
Yes. Both Mako Blade and Mako Swim work across balustrade and pool fencing applications, which makes them a practical choice if your project includes both. The structural drawings for each application are separate. One is set for F4 (balustrades), one for F9 (pool fencing).
What colours are available?
Mako balustrades are available in black or white as standard. Custom colours can be accommodated. Get in touch and we can talk through options for your project.
